Heritage Portraits Workshop with artist Sally
Join artist Sally Dye for an inspiring, hands-on workshop introducing the art of portrait painting.
For the first of a new season of 'Chew's Art' activities, join artist Sally Dyer on Sunday 18 May, for an inspiring, hands-on workshop introducing the art of portrait painting. With Sally's support and guidance, create an original A4 canvas painting of a loved one.
Bring along an A4 sized head and shoulders photographic image of a chosen family member (black and white or colour photo, copy or digital print, enlarged to fill A4) perhaps share a story or two about them and their significance within your life, and let Sally take care of the rest.
Sally will introduce a simple technique that means drawing skills are not necessary and you can go straight into the wonderful journey of working with paint. Learn the basics of colour mixing, light and shade, brush use and mark-making with acrylic paints to capture a person's likeness. All media and materials provided.
Afterwards, reflect on your achievements with other workshop participants, enjoy time in our garden and maybe purchase something to eat or drink from our independent food hall traders.
This workshop is suitable for ages 14 plus, no previous experience required, all abilities welcome.
Duration: 2 and a half hours tutorial time, commencing 11am (plus comfort and refreshment breaks, time to reflect/view outcomes) until 2:30pm.
Sally was featured on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2015, She made it through to the semi-finals of the show, winning her heat and the opportunity to paint famous sitter Richard Dawkins. Since then, she has been teaching in Preston and Greater Manchester, delivering a wide range of art workshops, working 1-2-1 and developing her skills in forming creative, accessible learning opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Since graduating, Sally's practice has explored heritage, her grandfather being one of the first West Indians to make a home for himself in Preston, many of her works feature his image.
